Welcome to SebZeppelin's Website!
For now, this is simply a simple html list of topics I'm interested about with simple descriptions and links to other people's useful stuff.

- Kodi HTPC - I first started using Kodi around 2013 on an old ITX motherboard. The experience was fantastic - a very shiny front end to a library of media that I was only used to seeing in Windows Explorer. It was interesting to learn about scrapers and online film and TV databases. This was before streaming had become ubiquitous; netflix launched in the UK in Jan 2012 [1] and didn't explode for a couple of years. This machine was slowly expanded with more hard drives until the release of the Raspberry Pi 5, which when running LibreElec is capable of rendering 4k video smoothly, even for files upwards of 30GB. This prompted me to set up a NAS (see later section). Interestingly, running Raspbian and Kodi gave notable worse performance: it was only the optimised LibreElec (a very lightweight linux distro aimed specifically at running only Kodi) that allowed for this playback of high-bitrate 4k video.
- Pi-hole - Frustrated by the sheer quantity of ads on some websites (and their eye-grating content) I set up a simple DNS adblocker using a Raspberry Pi 1B. This was my first Pi, bought just to see what it was capable of. (Not a HTPC it turned out). (See https://pi-hole.net).
- Network Attached Storate (NAS) - Having gotten a HPTC running based on a RPi 5, I had no good way of connecting multiple SATA HDDs to the RPi. I was overdue moving the raft of disks to a dedicated machine running a more appropriate OS and filesystem. Enter TrueNAS and ZFS.
- Raspberry Pi streamer - See 'audio' section for details.
